I have assumed that this craft is for clearing silt and other debris from the canals around London. The Canal & River Trust's logo can be seen in the centre of the boat.

The Point - Paddington - London - 17.11.2014

This is the blunt end of The Point, an office block at the western end of the Paddington Basin development. The other two sides are convex curves meeting at a point, creating a 'flat-iron' shape.

I wondered if any of the hospital staff, from the buildings looking down on the Basin, have found accommodation on board these craft. Given the exorbitant level of rents in central London any options are worth looking at!

I have uploaded these three photos as there seems to be interest in the Surrey Canal or as my old Gazetteer of about 1884 calls it the Grand Surrey Canal. For a map of the area, from the gazetteer go to www.ipernity.com/doc/philsutters/26372743 and to complete the canal's route please see www.ipernity.com/doc/philsutters/27913043 There is also an old photo of St. George's Church standing beside this end of the Canal, probably from c1900 at : www.ipernity.com/doc/philsutters/26108455

Parts of the towpath under and around the bridge have been retained and it is easy to visualize water where the tarmac is now. The canal's route has now been preserved as a linear park running from Peckham High Street to the Old Kent Road. For a nineteenth century map of the area go to www.ipernity.com/doc/364457/26372743 and to complete the canal's route please see www.ipernity.com/doc/364457/26372745

Old Grand Surrey Canal Bridge - perhaps

04 Dec 2011 258
I am sure that somewhere the origin of this bridge is recorded, but it seems most likely that it was one of the footbridges that spanned the nearby Grand Surrey Canal. The route of the canal can be clearly seen running from west to east, about 100m south of this bridge's current location - if one looks at the aerial photo version of the map. For a nineteenth century map of the area go to www.ipernity.com/doc/364457/26372743 and to complete the canal's route please see www.ipernity.com/doc/364457/26372745 This area of Burgess Park has been due for redevelopment, but as I haven't been there recently I don't know what has or hasn't happened.
