Northern Cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis) .. State Bird of North Carolina .. Illinois Indiana Ohio West Virginbia Virginia. and Kentucky - source: StateBirds of US - Very common in Eastern US and parts of Southwest .. Love Black Sunflower seeds ( and pumpkin seeds ) along with insects .... Both have a crest - a bit windblown on this day .. Male is an unmistakable bright red with the Female subdued in her coloring .. Juveniles have a dark beak that gets lighter as they age .. Beautiful songbirds ! Two professional sports teams and several universities have made the cardinal their mascots. © All Rights Reserved
