The "caves" are a network of 22 miles of human-dug tunnels and caverns, some created as early as the 13th century. Initially for mining chalk and flint, they were used in the 20th century as munitions storage in WW1, a mushroom farm, extensive bomb shelters in WW2 housing 15,000 people, a music venue and for tv and film location shooting.

Last year's guide told us all about the Enigma machine, code breaking and computing at Bletchley Park. This year's guide focused on what it was like to work there during the war. 75% of the workers were women, and the average age was 20.

Re-enactors

Not sure if it's just a Sunday thing, but there were a dozen or so re-enactors walking around in 1940s clothing.

There used to be a carpark here. They've recently done excavation work and discovered the foundation of Hut 2, which as where the workers could go to buy snacks, cigarettes and beer.

Monument to those who worked at Bletchley Park to break the German codes during World War II. They are credited with shortening the war by two years. Many of the codebreakers were women. The day we were at Bletchley Park, there was filming going on of the movie The Imitation Game, starring Benedict Cumberbatch (as Alan Turing) and Keira Knightly. We only saw the extras -- these guys were at the craft service truck.
