I went on a history walk around Florence, MA and learned about the utopian association and the abolitionists here in the 1840s and 1850s. Steve Strimer has done research on Sojourner Truth during her time in Florence, the underground railroad, and David Ruggles. We're standing in the Pine Grove and Steve is holding a photo of the Association's main building that used to stand below and behind him. He was a free black, an abolitionist and conductor on the underground railroad, a pamphleteer, and the first African American to own a bookstore.
