According to Ghost Signs: A London Story by Sam Roberts "David Levy ran his lodging house here between about 1905 and 1917. The sign represents a time when women made up a large proportion of the workforce, but had difficulty in securing housing. Records of the 'hotel' show that thirty women occupied ten rooms in a mixture of cubicles and dormitory accommodation. These women were employed in a variety of trades, including a piano teacher, a necktie maker and a newspaper seller."

I think the busts are Maggie Keswick Jencks and the Jencks daughters. The Cosmic House, Lansdowne Walk, Holland Park. This post-modern house was designed by Charles Jencks and his wife Maggie Keswick Jencks. It was the primary residence of the Jencks family from 1978 until Charles Jencks death in 2019 (Maggie, for whom the Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centres are named, died in 1995). The house is Grade I listed.

I'd never seen a pink plaque (women's history) before. This one is for two sisters, artists and educators, who founded the Channing House School to educate girls and young women in 1885. The school is still going today, with a Junior School, Senior School and Sixth Form College.

The first women's prison in Ireland. During the Great Hunger, women who had been sentenced to transportation (i.e. to be deported to Australia) were held here before boarding the boat. The smallest of crimes could result in a sentence.
