This is the fourth in a line of five tombstones with skulls in the churchyard of St Leonard's, Flamstead. I hope to return to this one as it was in shade when I took the photo.

Detail from a tombstone in St Leonard's churchyard, Flamstead. It was raining when I took this photo and the light was not ideal. The memorial is to Mary, but I cannot make out the surname. I'll have to check the HMI volume. Given the size of the stone (small) and the style, it is probably late 17th/early 18th century.

Or is it an inscription?
Within this pier
where bricks are laid
there lieth buried
a virgin maid
Ffrauncys [Frances] Cordell
was her name
she lived and died
in good fame
ano 1597 June vij

Tombstone inscription from Flamstead church, Hertfordshire.
Affliction sore long time I bore
Physicians were in vain
I found no ease till God did please
To ease me of my pain.

Tombstone inscription from Flamstead church, Hertfordshire.
A pale consumption gave the fatal blow,
The stroke was certain but the effect was slow,
With wasting pains death found me long oppres'd
Pitty'd my sighs and kindly gave me rest.
