One Last View of the Crowd

Our thanks to Mark Gaynier of KC Campground for hosting the bands, and for inviting us to participate. 'Twas a fine afternoon.

Old Friends

Here's Steve Thomas being interviewed by Jeff Tuttle, in front of a caricature of Jeff. It was immediately clear that they'd known each other for years, from Jeff's time as a Nashville-based musician. Steve helped produce Jeff's CD, " Livin' Like a Millionaire (ain't got a dime) ". Here are both of 'em, in 2007, playing the title song . Jeff's a native of Monroe, and is now the morning DJ on the local radio station, Nash-Icon 98.3 . During the September 15 program Jeff introduced both Steve's Time Machine band and Dave Adkins, and he interviewed both musicians on stage after they performed. If you watched the Adkins show last Saturday you saw that interview, mixed in with the music. There was a similar mix of music and interview in the October 17 livestream of Steve's show. Just for the heck of it, here's another video of that song, with a dancer .

Mark & Steve

Mark Gaynier was our host--he owns KC Campground and put together the program. Steve Thomas told us he'd appeared at the Milan Bluegrass Festival with several bands. It was pretty clear these guys had known each other for years. Steve's part of the day's festivities will be streamed this Saturday, October 17. Details are here .

Dave Adkins Called the Crowd "Intimate"

A matter of perspective, methinks. There were just a few of us (thus, "intimate"), somewhat scattered in a space that often holds thousands. We all had a good time. And I enjoyed (re)watching Dave's part of the show last night on the Milan Festival's livestream.

The Venue Wasn't Crowded

We came to listen--which was good, because one purpose of the "crowd" was to give the bands an audience. The organizer's priority was clearly getting a good recording of the performers. We all seemed to be regular festival attendees; most of the faces were familiar. Social distancing was easy, and mostly we were well-behaved. The band on the stage here is Steve Thomas & the Time Machine.

Went to a Bluegrass Festival the Other Day

Got a call from Mark Gaynier about a month ago. Mark owns KC Campground near Milan, Michigan, and hosts the Milan Bluegrass Festival every August. This year's festival had to be cancelled, of course, but Mark wanted to invite me to an afternoon show with three bands, and a small group of spectators. So we and a couple dozen others spent a Tuesday afternoon at Mark's place, listening to music and chatting with friends. It was a good day. The bands were Huron Ridge , which is local, the Dave Adkins Band , an established national touring group, and Steve Thomas & the Time Machine , a new touring group with a veteran leader. The show was recorded--you can see Nick Failla and his camera in this photo--and Mark's posting parts of the program as pay-per-view shows to benefit the bands. The first show was Saturday, October 10, featuring Dave Adkins.
