DMIR @ Soo

10 Apr 2005 86
Wisconsin Central 598 and Duluth, Missabe, & Iron Range 170 at Sault Ste. Marie, June, 1992. 170 is a perfectly typical Missabe SD-9, acquired by the railroad in 1959 and sold off-line in 1998. Fallen flag, falling flag. This photo was taken a few hundred yards from the Soo Locks and was the next I took after the Kinsman series; this is at Wisconsin Central's staging yard for building trains to cross the Saint Mary's River on the long railroad bridge. The DMIR's a physically compact system at the distant end of Lake Superior; this loco was a long way from Minnesota's Arrowhead region. At the time, WC was a new railway, and hadn't completed repainting the equipment it had inherited from the Soo Line--thus the box car in the background. A decade later, the Canadian National Railway has absorbed the Wisconsin Central, and is in the process of absorbing the Missabe. A sad time for Missabe's fans--a group which includes me. Sadder still for Missabe's employees in Duluth and Proctor....

Thayer at rest

One last photo from this roll of film: Paul Thayer from stem to stern at Missabe Railroad's Duluth dock; approximately 1990.

Unloading Boom

16 Nov 2008 80
Since the long boom tends to interfere with the loading chutes, Thayer gets hers out of the way. And we get a close look.... Another photo from that tour I took of Duluth harbor around 1990. (Dunno who the people are.)

Thayer at Duluth

Oglebay Norton's Paul Thayer (now sailing as Manitowoc; once labelled Earl W. Oglebay and for a short period as just Earl W.), taking on aload near the end of Missabe Railway's half-mile long Duluth dock. Photo taken from a tour boat around 1990.

Duluth Docks

11 Nov 2005 136
The Duluth docks of the Duluth, Missabe, & Iron Range Railroad. Dock #5 is on the right, and Dock #6 is on the left. I no longer recall what the ship was, though American Mariner or H. Lee White would be good guesses--as would a couple of their fleetmates. Each dock is extends about a half mile into the harbor. Dock 5 is your classic, gravity-driven iron ore dock, while Dock 6 has been converted into a massive, modern, conveyor-driven shiploader. The shiploader permits the dock to service the 1000-foot ships which now dominate the trade. (I commented on this , from another perspective, a few days back.) This photo was taken in 1990 from the viewing platform on the DMIR property. The camera was a throwaway panoramic point-n-shoot. (Since the date on this photo is certainly correct, my recent Soo & Marquette photos are dated incorrectly. I need to figure that out.)
