Great Hall Interior

01 Sep 2006 78
The interior of the reconstruction of the Great Hall; Grand Portage National Monument, on Lake Superior in northern Minnesota. ======================= Why Reconstructed Places Have Gone Out of Fashion One of the problems with historical landmark reconstruction is the gaps in the information. The folks who built and decorated the Great Hall at Grand Portage likely had some drawings and other documentation, but those typically leave out essential details. These museums are generally a cross between things which are clearly known, things which are believed to be typical, and the occasional WAG . I don't know the exact mix, here; on the whole, the place is convincing. But I've spent enough time researching easier subjects to know the limitations of historical research. Then there are pedagogical issues. The present display includes table settings, trade goods, maps, and furs; this is more to give the enactors who inhabit the place something to point at as they explain things than any pretense of historical accuracy. That is to say, I'm sure the display is "accurate" at some level, but I'm also quite certain that when the trading headquarters was active you'd never find the place looking even vaguely like this photo shows. Nonetheless, I love the place. Perhaps in a decade or so I'll find my way there yet again.

Inside Jolli

Bathroom Layout @ Pointes North

03 Mar 2011 72
Pointes North's peculiar bathrooms have this central hall. To the left, through the open door, is the combination toilet & linen closet. At the end of the hall, the shower. Close on the right, the bathroom sink. Farther down to the right, a window. It opens into the main room, over the Jacuzzi. (I seem not to take pictures of Jacuzzis. Not sure why.) The window has a blind, but if you leave it down, the maid raises it. Privacy, evidently, is not an issue. Navigating this setup in the dark is an issue.... Pointes North Inn, Traverse City.

Room 207, Pointes North

Once you get past the oddly-arranged bath, the rooms are quite attractive. The comfy sofa by the window is far better than most affordable hotels offer; a nice touch. And the lighting's great. Reason enough, for us, to keep coming back. The sink in the foreground is in the "kitchen"--a tiny microwave, a coffee maker, and a small fridge complete that feature. Beyond the kitchen, and out of sight here, is the Jacuzzi. And yes, the room really comes to a point . Pointes North Inn, Traverse City. Joan on the sofa, of course.

Bentley's B-N-L Cafe

Still behind. It may take a few days to catch up. All of the 366 Snaps photos for last June 17 were taken at Bentley's, where we ate breakfast. It's fairly dark in the B-N-L, and I only took 7 photographs. This was not just the best; it's really the only acceptable image. So here it is again, processed differently. A year ago I processed it (in Bibble Pro--now available as Corel Aftershot Pro) according to my then-current practice of imitating Ilford film printed on Kentmere Art De Luxe using the Andrea plugin. Today's version was more directly processed using Bibble's built-in tool set. Both, as usual, were then sharpened in Photoshop Elements. One side effect of the daily photo project was that I learned Bibble's toolset. For much of the year this gain largely showed as increasingly sophisticated use of the product's Andrea plugin, but by the year's end I was mostly using the program's "native" tools. This set is limited--Photoshop Elements is a far more capable program--but for most photographs I've found it adequate. What's more, the program's design makes it nearly impossible for your to destroy the original photo by accidentally overwriting it with a modified version. And Bibble's an excellent product for sorting through a lot of photographs (that's what I originally purchased it for), and for applying the same processing to a group of photos quickly. ========== This photograph is an outtake (well, actually an alternate treatment) from my 2012 photo-a-day project, 366 Snaps . Number of project photos taken: 7 Title of " roll :" Bentley's Other photos taken on 6/17/2012: Joan and I spent much of the day wandering around Sault Ste Marie, where I shot nearly 300 pix. After supper we visited the Tern colony; I took well over a thousand mostly-lousy pix.
