Muskegon's harbor entrance is protected by two breakwaters and two piers. This is the South Pierhead light. There's a square tower at the end of the south breakwater and a smaller navigational aid at the end of the north breakwater.

Best LARGE .
My father walked beaches, so I grew up walking beaches. Mom would pack a lunch, we'd pile in the car and head to South Haven or St. Joe or wherever. We'd walk, sometimes for hours.
Then for a long time I didn't walk beaches.
Now I walk beaches again, though not as often as I'd like. This one happens to be Muskegon State Park.
Explored (#50 on Wednesday, September 19, 2007). Thanks! (No longer in the top 500. Explore is mysterious.)

Shot from the breakwater at the end of the channel at Muskegon, looking at the small beach within the larger breakwater which protects the harbor. I particularly like the peculiar clouds, which are probably more visible in the larger sizes.
It was a glorious day at the beach.

Grand Traverse Bay, from the Boathouse .
The Boathouse is easily the most expensive restaurant we "frequent"--we eat there once each year, on Joan's birthday. The food rivals the view....

South Haven's harbor used to be a conventional port. It had open areas where self-unloading freighters could dump their bulk cargoes, and warehouses which protected incoming package freight and outgoing blueberries.
At the end of our hotel's pretty alleyway is a tiny jewelry shop named "The Perfect Setting." The shop lives in an apparently ancient brick building which likely began as some sort of harbor office. Perfect Setting's wall shows an old (1960ish) aerial photograph of South Haven. Of the harborfront buildings shown in that photo, only two seem to have survived into the 21st century: Perfect Setting itself, and this large, also repurposed, structure.

Fishtown in winter....
We've turned around, and are looking down the river to where it empties into Lake Michigan. Leland's Fishtown is on the right; the breakwater shows in the background. The large boat is Mishe-Mokwa, the transport to the Manitou Islands.
This photo is quite similar to one I posted a couple weeks back ; that one was taken by my father in 1973. Besides the sorts of insignificant details you'd expect to change in three decades, the most obvious change is the planking on the boardwalk.

The other day Larry asked "Where's the casino?"
Of course, in May of 1991 Sarnia's Casino was still a warehouse. (I'm quite certain Larry actually knows that.) Far more interesting to look at, too, if you ask me.
Taken from Port Huron with my Chinon Genesis III and a too-grainy roll of film. That's the (still singular) Blue Water Bridge in the background.

Another photo from our July 3 visit to Port Huron. Perhaps the best day of the year.

Far better in the larger size.
Shadow and light on Lake Huron, from Port Huron, 7/3/2005.
Spinnaker, according the dictionary supporting Apple's Dashboard, is derived from Sphinx, the name of the first yacht to use such a sail. I wouldn't have guessed.
