Sleeping Bear Bay

07 Mar 2006 134
Explored! #86 on Monday, July 23, 2007. Thanks! Perhaps the prettiest place I know: Sleeping Bear Bay, on Lake Michigan, from Glen Haven, Michigan. The big dune is Sleeping Bear; the island is South Manitou.

Frozen Marina

This is the Marina at Suttons Bay, Michigan. It's cold, and the boats have taken shelter. But still a remarkably pretty place.

Snow on the <strike>Azalea</strike> Quince

I really intended to stop with the Quince pictures, but under the circumstances I couldn't resist.

Christmas blessings to all my Flickr friends. Thanks, all, for another year's wonderful photographs.

Former Lily

Though it's quite finished as a flower, this still-leaved stalk is really quite attractive.

Mishe-Mokwa

13 Mar 2006 98
Fishtown in Winter.... This ship is the usual transport to the Manitou Islands. She's named after the the bear in the local Legend of the Sleeping Bear . Leland, Michigan.

Squirrel on Pedestal

Squirrel!

Still playing with my Minolta 75-200 f4.5 lens attached to my D300 with a Fotodiox adapter. Obviously the setup works. I own a variety of old Minolta lenses. I thought I was buying an adapter to fit my V1, but evidently ordered the wrong thing. Since the adapter's inexpensive, and fits my D300, it seems worth some experimentation. With the adapter on, things work OK, though the camera seems to think this lens is f2.8 and 50mm. Since at this point I'm just setting things by trial and error, that's harmless.

It's Back!

Oreo's glad she moved indoors.

Cats. Always cats. In my yard. Better on black in the lightbox (or press "L").

Grand Traverse Light House

16 Mar 2011 74
Old light--the building--on the left; new light--the steel tower--on the right. In Leelanau State Park at the tip of Michigan's little finger. There was a fox on the beach when we were there the other day. Even though I was several hundred feet away, it abandoned the gull it was carrying and fled. To me I don't seem so scary.

Carlson's

03 Mar 2006 75
Fishtown in Winter.... Carlson's still sells fish in Leland, Michigan's Fishtown. Looked like they were the only functioning Fishtown business last weekend; the other stores are quite tourist-dependent and apparently close down for the off-season.

Old Glory

In front of our office, during yesterday's perpetual snowstorm . The blue flag is MIchigan's. (Hey, it's a state office .) Bright, sunny, and just gorgeous today, by the way.

Wall

31 Dec 2005 79
Downtown Portland, Michigan, again. We've crossed Grand River Avenue; this wall keeps Duke's, which is on Grand River at the river, from falling into the water. Really delightful, albeit unruly, stonework.

Weather Report

18 Jan 2006 111
First it rained for two days. Then it snowed last night, and continued to snow today. Slippery. Yucky.

The Looking Glass

01 Jan 2006 94
Portland, Michigan, calls itself "The City of Two Rivers." Just downstream from Duke's (yesterday's photo subject ), the rivers come together. That said, this is: The mouth of the Lookinglass River, as seen from the far bank of the Grand. That's a footbridge, by the way; the structure beyond the bridge is a (small) band shell.
