Emerson was a lumber town at the mouth of the Tahquamenon River on Lake Superior's Whitefish Bay. It's gone; calling it a ghost town would exaggerate its current status. Basically there's nothing there. Except this trail to the site , in the Tahquamenon Falls State Park. It's a worthwhile walk. We visited it on the first day of July in 2003.

Tahquamenon Falls State Park, June of 2003. My memory is that the bugs were awful; a few weeks later we walked the same trail under better conditions.

In 2003 I was writing sort of a blog about the Battle Creek Yankees and took this photograph to illustrate it. Non-baseball events overtook that project and it's long-since been taken down; perhaps someday I'll restore it. Original photo here . Among the many things I'll miss, now that the Battle Creek franchise has left town, is the view from this seat. My West Michigan tickets arrived on Friday, along with a note telling that Lansing's tix will be available on March 15. The season begins April 5. I'm getting antsy....

May 15, 2004 @ Battle Creek. South Bend's Chad Scarbery is pitching. The Yankee batter seems to be Eric Duncan, which would make this the fifth inning (as you can see, I didn't take notes). The Yanks are far ahead, and Scarbery's about cooked. Dunc is about to poke one over the left field fence.... Explored! #220 on Flickr [July 23, 2007, but no longer in the day's top 500.
