Fake views at Salisbury

'Fake' in that it was early morning when the DNG was exposed. The night time illusion was created using Affinity Photo software. (The presence of the moon is real, however.) Split toned, therefore not monochrome. (Trying to make something out of a lack-lustre DNG, really.)

Florence rooftops with Duomo

13 Nov 2018 4 2 242
The Duomo in Florence, also known as Florence Cathedral, is very difficult to photograph from street level. The streets are narrow and usually full of people, shoppers and tourists. This picture was taken from a small café terrace which in addition to serving good food and drinks allows this splendid view to the cathedral over the rooftops of Florence. The cathedral named in honour of Santa Maria del Fiore is a vast Gothic structure built on the site of the 7th century church of Santa Reparata, the remains of which can be seen in the crypt. The dome is an architectural marvel, as there is another dome underneath the one we can see from the outside.

St Joseph and his staff - statue in Santa Maria As…

03 Nov 2018 1 1 146
In the church of Santa Maria Assunta, Gavinana, Tuscany, Italy. The flowering staff seems to refer to the story of how a spouse for Mary (the Biblical mother of Jesus) was divinely chosen when his dead stick miraculously burst into flower. This 'non biblical' story seems to have been popular in Italy, it was the subject of Raphael's famous painting Lo Sposalizio. ISO 12800 in a dark corner and a lot of post processing. Joseph is supposed to be a model of male humility in service and duty, so perhaps he would not mind not being the point of focus.

Church of Saint George, Spinalonga

26 Sep 2018 3 4 203
The Church of St George dates back to 1661, built during the Venetian occupation of the island. It is close to the Graveyard where members of the leper community were buried between 1903 and 1957. Spinalonga is a small island just off the coast of northern Crete. The island was occupied by a community of leprosy sufferers from 1903 to 1957, and was one of the last active 'leper colonies' in Europe. A hospital was built, and once on the island the leprosy sufferers received food, water, medical attention and social security payments. Previously, such amenities had been unavailable to them, as they had mostly lived in the area's caves, away from the towns and villages. The community's buildings are now mostly in a state of ruin, notable exceptions being two church buildings, St George and St Pantalion, and a Venetian fortress. The fortress dates from the Venetian occupation of the island, from c1550 to 1715.
