The change in limestone colour occured after they stopped building the monument for a few years. When they restarted the build, all that was left was limestone that hadn't been cleaned by the elements for as long.

Although this pose (?) was made famous when the Marines had dealt with Iwo Jima, the statue was supposed to represent the bravery of all marines.

I was walking between the Jefferson and Lincoln Memorials and saw two Indian teams playing a semi-serious (whites pads etc) game of cricket in the park.
It was a shock to see the sport being played here.
