Saxon Defensive Lines at Hastings

Apparently the Saxons under the leadership of King Harold decided to fight from a position in front of the Abbey (which wasn't there at the time). The Abbey was later torn down in the reformation.

The main rout of the Saxon forces at the Battle of Hastings took place here after the Normans tricked the Saxons into breaking ranking and chase them down the hill. 7000 people died in the battle.

A matter of a few weeks before the end of the American Civil War, the Confederates won what must have been one of their last victories here. Incidentally, the Natural Bridge runs to the right here.

The Union troops crossed this bridge at the First Battle of Bull Run. When they were repulsed and retreated over this bridge, it was supposed to be absolute chaos. The Confederacy would later destroy the bridge. It was rebuilt after the Civil War.
