Malaxis unifolia (Green Adder's-mouth orchid)
03 May 2013 |
|
This orchid species has the smallest flowers of any of our native orchids, measuring about 2mm wide.
My flickr friend Keith Bradley told me that he had a lead on a site for Malaxis unifolia in the Congaree National Park and wondered if I'd be interested in seeing it. What!?! You have to ask? ;-)
Anyway, I met him down there (near Hopkins, SC) about 10:00 am, dodging rain showers all the way down. Fortunately, it didn't even sprinkle on us for the two hours we were there.
What a great time and place to photograph this seldom seen orchid...

Platanthera lacera (Ragged fringed orchid)
01 Jun 2012 |

In preparation for an upcoming orchid hunting trip in two weeks, I decided to make a day trip to a site near Columbia, South Carolina to see if Platanthera lacera (Ragged fringed orchid) was blooming early this year as are many of our other native orchids.
I was shown this site five or six years ago, and I had not visited it in the last four years, so I did not know the current status of the plants.
I arrived at the site to find that much of the tree cover had been removed. The site was not large to begin with. Now, it's just a small swath next to a railroad track. Fortunately, I found four plants in bloom and spent about two hours taking photographs...
