Nossa Senhora do Cabo. The Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora do Cabo Espichel, also known as Nossa Senhora da Pedra Mua, is one of the most impressive places in this region due to its location and its remarkable natural architectural complex. The cult dates back to 1410, the year in which the venerated image of Nossa Senhora do Cabo was discovered at the end of Cabo Espichel, by two old men from Caparica and Alcabideche, who in coincident dreams had been warned by Heaven. Until the beginning of the 18th century, the square around the primitive temple was surrounded by houses for the pilgrims who came there on pilgrimage to venerate her image.

Until today there have not been encountered any evidence of Muslim settlement, but the local toponymy has a few markers, such as the name Azóia, that derived from Al Zawiya (meaning hermitage). Some Moorish coins were also discovered in Lapa do Fumo (but minted in Silves) and some ceramics attributed to hermits from the Lapa do Forte do Cavalo and Lapa do Coelho. During the Middle Ages, various legends attracted people to the site; it was a crucible of Portuguese nationalism, when on 29 July 1180, in the square of Cabo Espichel, D. Fuas Roupinho was able to obtain the nation's first naval victory against the Moors.

In geography, a cape is a headland or a promontory of large size extending into a body of water, usually the sea. A cape usually represents a marked change in trend of the coastline which makes them prone to natural forms of erosion, mainly tidal actions. This results in capes having a relatively short geological lifespan. Capes can be formed by glaciers, volcanoes, and changes in sea level. Erosion plays a large role in each of these methods of formation.

During the fifties down there you could sometimes find very big fish. I swam here with the first hammerhead shark I had ever seen, perhaps drowsy from an Ocean wild beating.Usually they would relax for 2 or 3 days before taking to the large again. On the background you have the 15 km long sand beach named Costa da Caparica. Straight North is Lisbon.
