The façade and interior of Lamego Cathedral integrate architectural styles from different periods, simultaneously imposing a sense of beauty and monumentality.
The first reference to the bishopric of Lamego dates from the year 572, when Bishop Sardinário was present at the II Council of Braga, but the diocese was only restored after the defeat of the Arab invaders, having reappeared in the twelfth century. The building that exists today began to be built in 1159 on top of an old chapel dedicated to São Sebastião, erected a few decades earlier. In 1175 it was consecrated and dedicated to Santa Maria and São Sebastião.

Tilia is a genus of about 30 species of trees or bushes, native throughout most of the temperate Northern Hemisphere. In Britain and Ireland they are commonly called lime trees, or lime bushes, although they are not closely related to the tree that produces the lime fruit. Other names include linden for the European species, and basswood for North American species

The monumental staircase was built from 1777, when Bishop Manuel de Vasconcelos Pereira hired the bricklayer Manuel Faustino Loureiro (who had previously worked at the church, together with Francisco Rente) for its execution, based on drawings sent from Lisbon . Composed of several sections and levels, with varied fountains and sculptures, among which we highlight the Pátio dos Reis (with the fountain of Remedies by Nicolau Nasoni), the staircase was only finished much later, already in the 20th century . Although the original plan included several chapels, only one was built and dedicated to the Sagrada Familia. The decoration, which along the staircase encourages the faithful, denotes an entire iconographic program dedicated to the Virgin, which culminates in the church

V century, near Lamego.
The construction of the chapel occurred in an undetermined point in the high Middle Ages. Defenders of the Visigothic chronology of events, point to an inscription dated from 588. Other arguments, enunciated by Lampérez y Romea, point to the triumphal arch and basilica-like plan that was adapted to favour its Visiothic origins. The idea of a 6th–7th century church gained favour directly and was repeated by other authors, such as Schlunk, Fernando de Almeida and Hauschild, among others

The Our Lady of the Assumption Cathedral (Portuguese: Sé Catedral de Nossa Senhora da Assunção) also called Lamego Cathedral is a religious building affiliated with the Catholic Church that was founded in 1129. It is located in the city of Lamego .The temple follows the Roman or Latin rite and serves as the seat of the diocese of Lamego (Dioecesis Lamacensis or Diocese de Lamego) that was created about 570. It is a cathedral built in Gothic style, which preserves the bell tower original square, but the rest of the architecture reflects the changes made in the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries, including a Renaissance cloister with a dozen arches and well proportioned.
