Air Conditioned Motel

23 Jan 2024 5 3 102
The Shawnee Chief motel located in Shawneetown, Illinois. The Shawnee Indians were a tribe that lived here in Southern Illinois. Although this is located in Shawneetown, it's actually what should be called "New Shawneetown." Old Shawneetown, (what was the original Shawneetown, is located a few miles down the road from here. But the old Shawneetown was built on the banks of the Ohio River and it flooded a lot. Some residents chose to move further away and start this new version of their town. But some residents chose to stay and that's why there is still the original settlement with people living by the banks of the river. Taken on December 30th, 2016, with my Sony Alpha SLT-a77V DSLR.

This is the John Marshall Bank, the first bank chartered in Illinois, in 1816. (Illinois didn't become a state until 1818 - 200 years ago - we're celebrating our bi-centennial.)
