An image from 2011 and sadly the photo quality shows its age! Another essential stop on the North Coast 500 road route, This is Smoo Inlet and the steps down to the magnificent Smoo Cave which is a large combined sea and freshwater cave. These benches are provided for the view and for rest on the 125-mtr high climb back to the top! Pip 1. A view from outside the cave, Pip 2 A view looking out, Pips 2 & 3 inside the cave! Ceannabeinne Beach, Durness, Sutherland. Another image from the back catalogue is not the best quality, but it does have a bench, white sand and azure water, plus it is a really beautiful area. Ceannabeinne means head of the mountains, traditionally called Traigh Allt Chailgeag which means the beach of the burn of bereavement and death. Eilean Hoan (the burial island) in the background is now a National Nature Reserve, formed of limestone it was until the clearances home to four families.
