Out on Whale One from Mooloolaba, Queensland. Always amazing to see these wild creatures.
Saw this young whale, having a lot of fun in and out of the water Accompanied by two adults who were keeping him/her a safe distance from our boat. Saw several more whales on our way back, as well as a large bottle nosed dolphin swimming right by the boat.
Tricky photograpy, though, with the swell of the ocean rocking the boat. Also there is only a split second to capture the moment when the whale is out of the water.

Somewhat utilitarian and relatively modern, this lighthouse dates from 1978 and was constructed of reinforced concrete surmounted by a precast concrete lantern room.
The light departed from the traditional light source and lens. It is powered by an array of sealed beam lamps. A red sector provides guidance to the North West for vessels entering Mooloolaba Harbour.
The light is unmanned and only requires servicing once every four months.

As part of the Scott Kelby Worldwide Photo Walk yesterday, I joined the Mooloolaba Walk on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland.
We met under the Square Arch at the top of Beach Terrace and started the walk at 4pm, meandering along the sea front to the Wharf.
Lieutenant Heath surveyed and chartered the Mooloolah River mouth and harbour in 1861. By 1864, the first land was purchased at the mouth of the Mooloolah River by William Pettigrew. Pettigrew dominated the timber trade in the Maroochy District for the next thirty years...Mooloolah Heads was the gateway to the Maroochy District between 1870 to 1884. Due to the protection Point Cartwright offered, the port was preferred over the Maroochy River. Pettigrew's steamers 'Tarshaw,' 'Tadorna Radjah' and 'Gneering' operated along both rivers. The steamers carried produce, passengers and timber between Mooloolaba and Brisbane...By the year 1919, Mooloolah Heads industry had grown to include fishing and fruit growing. Thomas O'Connor bought Pettigrew's land from Sylvester Murphy and surveyed the first allotments of what was to become Mooloolaba. On 1 January 1921, the first sale of allotments was held. These extended along the river frontage from the surf beach to Tucker Creek.
It was then that the name Mooloolaba was embraced to distinguish between this developing area and the Mooloolah township on the railway.

Pilot - Skirmish

Launched in April 2012 for the Brisbane Marine Pilots, Skirmish now operates out of Mooloolaba.
The $1.5 million Skirmish, a 14.2-metre vessel built by Norman R Wright & Sons, is propelled by twin 11-litre Cummins QSM11 engines rated at 455 hp and will carry out more than 60,000 pilot transfers over its minimum expected service life of 20 years... the (Brisbane Pilots) operation has 37 pilots – all former ships’ masters – who guide the ships on their journey of 50 nautical miles into the Port of Brisbane and then out again. The ships vary in size from 50 metres to close to 300 metres, while the biggest tankers have a beam up to 50 metres.
Watching a sea pilot – a tiny figure framed against the vast hull of a ship nearly 300 metres long – clamber from the pitching deck of a launch on to a swaying, slippery rope ladder dangling over the ship’s side emphasises just how hazardous their job can be.
