Australian Sea Lion - Kangaroo Island, Australia. After climbing the hill from the beach, this Australian sea lion seemed perplexed and unsure of what to do upon discovering that there were people, and not other sea lions, at the top. Approximately 15,000 Australian Sea Lions inhabit the southern and western coast of Australia. This sea lion is part of a colony who live on Seal Bay in Kangaroo Island. Kangaroo Island is the third largest island in Australia after Tasmania and Melville Island. Less that 4,600 people inhabit the island. The island is known for its natural beauty and wildlife. New Zealand fur seals

New Zealand Fur seals on Kangaroo Island, Australia. Commercial hunting almost eradicated New Zealand fur seals from Kangaroo Island in the 1800's. They have rebounded to nearly 100,000 and pose a threat to penguins and fish stock. Fur seals, like sea lions, are members of the eared seal family (otariid). They differ from true seals (phocidae) in a number of ways, including having external ears, using their front flippers predominantly to swim and by being able to walk on all four flippers. AIMG_6512
