These hats are typically worn by female farmers in the fields to protect them from the sun. The pompom and yarn decoration is standard, but the colors vary depending upon the area.

"Marinera is a coastal dance of Peru. Marinera is a graceful and romantic couple's dance that uses handkerchiefs as props. The dance is an elegant and stylized reenactment of a courtship, and it shows a blend of the different cultures of Peru."

For The Sunday Challenge: Prop box.
I don't have a prop box so I ran all over the house, raiding the bookshelf, my husband's closet, his old Halloween costume and the walls for this shot.

"The hat known today as the Panama hat was produced in Ecuador as early as the seventeenth century. Straw hats woven in Ecuador, like many other 19th and early 20th century South American goods, were shipped first to the Isthmus of Panama before sailing for their destinations in Asia, the rest of the Americas and Europe, subsequently acquiring a name that reflected their point of international sale, 'Panama hats', rather than their place of domestic origin"
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panama_hat
After bleaching, the hats are left to dry inside out. They are then heated on a press to obtain their final shape.

Venice, Italy
"The profession of gondolier is controlled by a guild, which issues a limited number of licenses granted after periods of training and apprenticeship, and a major comprehensive exam which tests knowledge of Venetian history and landmarks, foreign language skills, and practical skills in handling the gondola typically necessary in the tight spaces of Venetian canals."
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gondolier
This was an all male profession until August 2010 when Giorgia Boscolo became the first female gondolier in Venice's history.

The Citadelle is today a military base and an official residence which is located atop Cap Diamant in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada. It was built in the 17th Century as a French fort and expanded by the British between between 1820 and 1831. In its time, because of its location at the top of the hill overlooking a narrow strait and its star shape, it was a mighty defense against a potential threat by the Americans and potential internal revolt.
