Santorini (Thira), Greece is one of the most beautiful islands in the Aegean Sea. It was named after St. Irene of Thessaloniki who died in 802. To get there by ship, one has to sail through the spectacular caldera (volcanic crater), now filled with sea water, past clifts rising to over 1,000 feet - some with towns on the top.

The city of Thira on the Grecian island of Santorini is perched high on a cliff. To get to it, one can take a cable car or walk or ride mules up the zig-zag path which appears on the left side of this photo. It is very popular with cruise ships.

Oia (pronouced Ee-ah) is one of the most beautiful towns on one of the most beautiful islands (Santorini) in Greece. The town is situated on a high cliff overlooking a volcanic caldera that is now filled with water from the Aegean Sea. Because the views are so spectacular, many tourists crowd the narrow walkways to peer out at the water and to enjoy the charming shops and restaurants. The town of Thira in Santorini, Greece sits almost 1000 feet above the sea. To get there from sea level, one can ride the mules (who will rub their rider's legs against the stone walls) or climb the winding manure covered stone path, or one can pay 4 euros to take the cable car up.

Oia (pronouced Ee-ah) is one of the most beautiful towns on one of the most beautiful islands (Santorini) in Greece. The town is situated on a high cliff overlooking a volcanic caldera that is now filled with water from the Aegean Sea. Some of the houses were built to jut out from the cliff while others (the "cave houses") were dug out of the volcanic soil in the caldera cliff.
