Moab Uranium Tailings 1798a

18 Feb 2010 189
Tailings from the Atlas uranium mine, adjacent to the Colorado River, just north of Moab at intersection of US 191 and UT 279. The tailings are on a seismically unstable area that is part of the flood plain of the Colorado, and thus threaten the water supply of all of the areas downriver (e.g., Phoenix, Las Vegas, Los Angeles) besides causing ecological damage to fish in the Colorado. The mine began operating in 1956, it wasn't until 2000 that an effort began to remove the toxic waste.

Moab Potash Mine 1810a

At the end of UT-279 (Potash road) is a potash mine and at the far end of the mine's railyard were these two locomotives, in a fenced off location. The mix of insignia on them suggest a checkered history, though there is some connection to the cleanup of the uranium tailings described in nearby photos. The 'Fernald' refers to the Fernald Feed Materials Production Center, a uranium processing facility in Ohio, which fabricated materials for U.S. nuclear weapons.
