Manzanar War Relocatoin Center gates pre-NPS

08 Jan 2015 2 286
The gates to the Manazanar Internment Camp before the area came under the control of the U.S. National Park Service. This was taken some time in the 1990's (specific date unknown). At the time when this was taken, the site was fenced off and part of it was used as storage of road equipment. What the site had been used for was unmarked, you had to know to look for it. That visit to the site was remarkable, even though I could not get in. When I pulled up to the entrance there were two older women standing and looking in. We got to talking and it turned out that they were sisters who had lived in Lone Pine and Darwin when this was an internment camp. They could remember the trains and buses bringing Japanese-Americans to the site, and one had worked on the site when it was active as an internment camp. I credit this experience of talking with them, and of seeing what was then a completely neglected site, with instigating my subsequent and ongoing efforts to find the various internment camps around the country. My thanks to Jasperdo's recent photos of Manzanar for reminding me that I had never posted this photo to Ipernity. I have other Manzanar photos that I will be posting in the near future. Interesting sign, particularly since Bishop is a fairly conservative rural town and Provincetown, MA is gay resort area and artist colony!

Pleasant Valley, a not so pleasant valley just north of Bishop. This is the Owens River from a pedestrian (former railroad) bridge. The bridge connects two sides of a primitive campground. Away from the river the area was very dry, the campground was really only ad hoc parking spots with long treks to chemical toilets that had not been maintained, and it appeared that locals came out to the campground to party at night. Luckily I was able to find a spot near a couple of men who were there for the fishing and were quiet.

Just west of Lone Pine are the Alabama Hills. The Alabama Hills are easily accessible, probably because they have been repeatedly used by Hollywood for filming. The area is fun to explore.

Outside Lone Pine, CA is this former train station. There were various rail lines running through the Owens Valley from the late 1800's until the 1940's -- the tracks no longer exist, but various structures do (see other pictures in this album). This former station is private property.
