The entire National Park Service office of the Tule Lake Segregation Center, within the Tulelake Museum. The man at the counter was extremely knowledgeable and we had a quite good discussion about the relocation centers and local communities. In particular, he explained quite well why the word 'interment' was replaced with the more accurate 'relocation center' for the other camps, and that Tule Lake was described as a 'segregation center' because it was designated as a center for those among the relocated Japanese who either refused to sign a loyalty oath (to the country that imprisoned them for being of Japanese ancestry) or were otherwise poor fits in the segregation camps. The Tulelake Museum, in the town of Tulelake, CA. When I first visited in 2006 the museum was completely the work of the town and yet it was an exceptionally well done exhibit on the Tule Lake Segregation (internment) Center. In 2008 a presidential proclamation created the Tule Lake Segregation Center National Monument which is operated by Lava Beds National Monument. While there wasn't much in the way of physical changes in what you could see, the inclusion of the Tule Lake unit with the National Park Service resulted in higher quality literature, all of which is very balanced in terms of addressing the justice issues. Remains of the Tule Lake Segregation (Japanese internment) center. Most of the site of the center has become housing, industrial, and farming but there is one small field where the jail was. (see further discussion with nearby pictures)

A farm/ranch WSW of the WWII Internment Center at Tule Lake. Per another viewer of the picture, the high point right of the elevators is Castle Rock, where the Japanese erected a cross on the highest point.

Timeline of events at Camp Tulelake. The camp was originally built by the depression-era Civilian Conservation Corps, early in WWII it was used for a period to house Japanese who were considered too 'difficult' to keep at the internment camp, and then in the latter years of the war it housed German and Italian POWs who worked in the fields in the area.

A side gate and housing left over from the Tule Lake Internment Camp. Much of the former housing has been remodeled and converted into apartments, the occupants appear to be local farm laborers. A replica of the original barracks is included in this series of photos.
