Below the Golden Gate bridge, is Fort Point. Fort Point was built during the Civil War and is one of the few brick forts on the west coast Photo taken in July, 2004 by a friend, used with his permission.

At both ends of the Golden Gate Bridge, there are remains of defense posts that were built in the early 1900's. The defense posts had heavy artillery, thus the very large gun turrets in the adjacent picture.

Nestled in the Marin headlands (across the bay in this picture) are silos (not visible in this picture) that contained Nike missiles during after the Cold War.

From various points in Pacific Heights, the sunsets can provide spectacular views of the bay, the Golden Gate Bridge, and Marin County.

From Strawberry Hill in Golden Gate Park, looking north. In the distance are the towers of the Golden Gate Bridge. The large building is the former U.S. Public Health Hospital, which has been closed since the 1980's. It started out as a merchant seamen hospital in the late 1800's. Considering the density of space in SF, it is surprising that it hasn't been put to some other use.
