US-50 crossing a salt flat. Sand Mountain (see nearby pictures) is behind the hill on the right side of the picture. In the distance is Fallon, NV. Barely visible in a horizontal line, to the left and below the center of the picture, is the road to the Huck Salt mine.

One thing that amazes me at such sites is the number of very young kids riding unsupervised on OHV's. Note the one near me. Just a couple moments later, as I was driving out of the park on what was the main road, two kids that looked to be somewhere between 9 and 12 came from behind a truck that was on the side of road, driving such vehicles, directly into the path of my car. If I hadn't slammed on brakes, I would have hit both, but they rode merrily on, chatting away and oblivious to what had happened. Considering the number of beer boxes in the dumpster, I'm not surprised at the number of kids driving dangerously and unsupervised.

Huck Salt mine, in the distance, seen from the camping area at Sand Mountain. The salt mine is much larger than it looks -- the yellow objects on the left side of the salt pile are road graders.

Sand Mountain Recreation Area, an OHV (off highway vehicle) recreation area operated by BLM. The mountain is 600 feet high and 2 miles long. Though such areas attract large numbers of people, the desire to be around loud machines, RV's parked close together, rule-less OHV driving, and sand everywhere, is incomprehensible to me. Apparently many had driven a fairly great distance, since most of the RV's that I saw had California tags.

Unusual columnar rock formations. The canyon was very shaded and I had to take the picture quickly since I had to stop in the middle of the road, but I thought some of the rockhounds on Ipernity might find this interesting.

The road crosses this mountain range in a narrow canyon where there's at least enough water for some trees. Along NV-722, the old US-50.

On NV-722, old US 50. Not very far back I had passed a sign saying that this section was not maintained. Considering the narrow gap up ahead, I wondered if I'd soon reach a point where I had to turn back.

NV-722. The route is labeled on maps as 'old US 50' which, per a Wikipedia article, was the first paved version of the Lincoln Highway, constructed in 1924-25. This is also referred to as NV-2, which was the designation given by Nevada to the Lincoln Highway before the US route system was developed. At this point the route fit the description used for US-50 of loneliest road. Though there are ranches along this section, I saw no other traffic for about a half hour.

First time I've seen such a warning in such a setting -- that Sevier Lake is not dry and that recovery is expensive.

Sevier Lake, from close up. From the distance the lake appears to be dry, but from closeup you realize it is actually fairly wet.
