Where I'm standing the bow is less than a foot wide, and to go over backwards is to risk being keelhauled, which is never pleasant and seldom survivable, so yes, I'm hanging on to the forestay.

I have no idea what boat this is -- sailing crew can be pretty promiscuous -- but Wendy Connal is resting on the port rail and we sailed together much of the summer, so I'm fairly sure we're heading out to race and equally sure we lost. The boat looks to be a C&C 40, and we were on a couple of those that summer.

Battling the helmsman

A properly trimmed spinnaker -- or "chute" -- is always on the verge of collapse, and it was my job to keep it right there. The helmsman, meanwhile, always tries to collapse the chute by heading too close to the wind, from time to time shouting "trim," which is the helmsman's way of saying "I've forgotten how to steer the boat." I think this picture was taken during Larchmont Race Week, which we won.

For a bunch of years I was the foredeck guy on this International One Design racing sailboat. That meant the spinnaker was mine, and my job was to make up on downwind legs the time lost by the helmsman due to bad strategy on the upwind legs.
