August 1968 – Ramsbottom Urban District Council acquired this Weymann bodied Albion Nimbus from Warrington Corporation (#95) in late 1967 although it had been new to the Halifax Joint Omnibus Committee in 1963 (#258). It became RUDC number 12 and was acquired to operate the Holcombe Village service following the reduction by Ribble Motor Services of its workings on service 278 (Walshaw-Tottington-Holcombe Brook-Holcombe Village) which was ‘jointly operated’ by RMS and RUDC between Holcombe Brook and Holcombe Village – in effect Ribble provided most, if not all, the runs between the latter and so when they pulled back RUDC had to provide the replacement facility. Number 12 was seen in the yard at Stubbins Lane garage.

The bus service up to Holcombe Village had, until the late 1960s, been largely covered by Ribble Motor Services on their Walshaw-Tottington-Holcombe Brook-Holcombe Village service 278. This page from the Ribble timetable book commencing 1 November 1967 now only showed school journeys between Holcombe Brook and Holcombe Village. It was around this time that Ramsbottom UDC acquired an Albion Nimbus to provide the daytime service up to Holcombe Village. Note the timetable states ‘Jointly with Bury Corporation and Ramsbottom UDC between Holcombe Brook and Holcombe Village’. Close examination of the timetables for service 216 and 278 shows that service 278 was covered by the buses to and from service 216.

There was also a service up to Holcombe Village which, until the late 1960s, was largely covered by Ribble on their Walshaw-Tottington-Holcombe Brook-Holcombe Village service 278. The Ribble timetable stated ‘Jointly with Bury Corporation and Ramsbottom UDC between Holcombe Brook and Holcombe Village’. The Ribble timetable ten years later (commencing 1 November 1967 - see next frame) showed only school journeys between Holcombe Brook and Holcombe Village and it was around this time that Ramsbottom UDC acquired an Albion Nimbus to provide the daytime service up to Holcombe Village.

Tuesday 31 May 1966 – Ramsbottom Urban District Council 30 (MTC 999) seen in the garage yard in Stubbins Lane, Ramsbottom. It was a Leyland bodied Leyland Royal Tiger PSU1/13 new in May 1952. The registration number plate would no doubt be worth a handsome price today! There is some railway rolling stock in the background where the preserved East Lancashire Railway now runs.

Tuesday 31 May 1966 – Ramsbottom Urban District Council 1 (247 STD) seen outside the garage in Stubbins Lane, Ramsbottom. The driver and conductress (what female conductors were called back then) were Jim and Amelia Driver. They are both in the darker clothing and had just brought the bus in from Edenfield and were being relieved by another crew - although that driver wasn’t up for being in the photograph. The bus is an East Lancs bodied Leyland PD2/24 new in January 1964.

Tuesday 31 May 1966 – Ramsbottom Urban District Council 1 (247 STD) was an East Lancs bodied Leyland PD2/24 new in January 1964. It was seen near the Rostron Arms pub in Edenfield in a dedicated bus bay into which the buses that terminated here would reverse and spend their lay-over time. The bay, directly opposite Merlewood, is now occupied by a recycling centre. Ribble timetables referred to this point in Edenfield as a ‘Bus Embayment’ – a term little used anywhere else. The crew, Jim and Amelia Driver, are stood in front of the bus before departure. The bus was bound for Bury but they were relieved at the garage in Stubbins Lane, Ramsbottom.

Tuesday 31 May 1966 – Ramsbottom Urban District Council 1 (247 STD) was an East Lancs bodied Leyland PD2/24 new in January 1964. It was the only bus in the fleet to have the ‘Midland Red’ style Leyland front subsequent double deckers had what was dubbed the ‘St. Helens front’. It was seen in Bolton Street, Ramsbottom on a Bury to Edenfield working. Some services travelled via Stubbins between Ramsbottom and Edenfield and some travelled via Shuttleworth as this one is. The destination blind includes the words “Via Rams’m and Shutt’h” – Ramsbottom and Shuttleworth would take up quite a lot of space on the blind!

Pages 4 to 21 featured the actual timetables and 22 to 24 contained the fares tables although on this copy the fares were overprinted ‘Cancelled’ as there had been a fares increase. Pages 2 and 3 contained ‘Fares Conditions’ and ‘Notes for Passengers’.

The main routes were between Bury and Rawtenstall (via Ramsbottom, Stubbins and Edenfield or via Ramsbotton-Shuttleworth and Edenfield) and between Bury and Water (via Walmersley, Shuttleworth, Edenfield and Rawtenstall).
There was also a service up to Holcombe Village which, until the late 1960s, was largely covered by Ribble on their Walshaw-Tottington-Holcombe Brook-Holcombe Village service 278.
