The Ramsbottom Urban District Council bus timetable booklet effective October 1964 contained 24 pages. Pages 4 to 21 featured the actual timetables and 22 to 24 contained the fares tables although on this copy the fares were overprinted ‘Cancelled’ as there had been a fares increase. Pages 2 and 3 contained ‘Fares Conditions’ and ‘Notes for Passengers’.

The main routes were between Bury and Rawtenstall (via Ramsbottom, Stubbins and Edenfield or via Ramsbotton-Shuttleworth and Edenfield) and between Bury and Water (via Walmersley, Shuttleworth, Edenfield and Rawtenstall). There was also a service up to Holcombe Village which, until the late 1960s, was largely covered by Ribble on their Walshaw-Tottington-Holcombe Brook-Holcombe Village service 278.

There was also a service up to Holcombe Village which, until the late 1960s, was largely covered by Ribble on their Walshaw-Tottington-Holcombe Brook-Holcombe Village service 278. The Ribble timetable stated ‘Jointly with Bury Corporation and Ramsbottom UDC between Holcombe Brook and Holcombe Village’. The Ribble timetable commencing 1 November 1967 showed only school journeys between Holcombe Brook and Holcombe Village and it was around this time that Ramsbottom UDC acquired an Albion Nimbus to provide the daytime service up to Holcombe Village.

Ramsbottom UDC fare tables 1 August 1968

A Ramsbottom Urban District Council fares table effective 1 August 1968. It was printed on foolscap size paper so the scan has omitted the full name and address and name of the General Manager (L T Merrall) which appeared at the foot of the page. It was printed on foolscap size paper which was longer than the A4 size I am able to scan.

Ramsbottom UDC Daily Mileage Statement

30 Dec 2015 329
Ramsbottom Urban District Council ‘Daily Mileage Statement’ – This sheet was completed in the bus depot office to record the mileage that each bus covered on which particular service. The bus fleet numbers are listed down the left hand side and the columns relate to each different ‘Route’. The approximate date of completion of the above example was 2 August 1968 so buses 10 and 11 had not yet been delivered thus the lines are blank. Unfortunately I cannot now recall which ‘route number’ on the sheet identified which particular service. RUDC did not show route numbers on their buses nor did Rawtenstall Corporation (Rossendale Joint Transport Committee from 1968). Bury Corporation did so displayjng 3 on the Bury-Rawtenstall-Water service and 4 on the Bury-Ramsbottom-Rawtenstall service. Both these services were jointly licenced to the three municipalities along with Ribble Motor Services so mileage records were quite important in apportioning revenue and expenses. RUDC was the main player on service 4 (I think Bury just worked the odd peak hour trip) whilst service 3 was usually maintained by Bury and Rawtenstall Corporations. As far as I can recall Ribble did not actually work any trips on either.

Ramsbottom UDC bus card

A small card was assigned to each bus every day. On one side each driver would record the journeys they made with the mileage and on the other side they would record any vehicle faults etc
