Iolaire Monument (PiPs)

16 Jun 2022 47 64 216
Taken at the Iolaire Monument, Isle of Lewis. At the end of the Great War sailors were being transported home. They landed at the Kyle of Lochalsh and set sail on HM Yacht 'The Iolaire' late on 31st December 1918 for the final stage of the journey home to the Isles of Lewis and Harris. In the early hours of New Year's Day 1919 just off Holm Point and within sight of the lights of Stornaway harbour the Iolaire struck the rocks known as the Beasts of Holm resulting in the deaths of 205 sailors. There were a number of contributing factors to the event, including insufficient care being taken on the approach, the yacht going too fast, no lookout in place and insufficient lifeboats and rafts in place. The inquiry did however give special recognition to a sailor named J F MacLeod who swam ashore with a rope thus enabling many others to be saved. Iolaire means 'Eagle' The PiPs show the detail and the memorial in the background, the names of those lost including one of the central section. Best viewed large I think

Walled (De-)Fences!

Taken at Steart in Somerset on a bleak afternoon with threatening skies above adding to the atmosphere. I loved the way the curved wall just seems to end, - but please be polite and use the gate!!! The track leads to the fence on the horizon, beyond which are the sea defences. The shapes of the trees are testament to how they are exposed to the elements on this flat open ground. Please view large. I have added Freddie Mercury 'In My Defence' as a link www.youtube.com/watch?v=44eEOAEC5z8 HFF and have a lovely weekend

Ubley Colours

Ubley Warren Nature Reserve - part of the Mendip AONB. The area has a long history of lead mining dating back to pre-Roman times to the 1800s and the land is scarred by overgrown old mine workings, shafts, rakes (shallow, vertical-walled cuttings through the bedrock where lead veins running close to the surface have been excavated), . and spoil heaps contouring the landscape. The Reserve forms part of the Cheddar Complex Site of Special Scientific Interest, protected areas along the top of the Cheddar Gorge, famous for it's dramatic beauty and it's caves.

One of the lovely beaches on the Isle of Lewis where you can make the long trek down to enjoy the white sand and clear blue sea or sit and enjoy the view from above. I have added Labrinth and Emeli Sande and 'Beneath Your Beautiful' as my link www.youtube.com/watch?v=TC8lAec474M

HFF Glen Etive We spotted this wonderful old wall in front of a fenced off area at Glen Etive. I added the link - 'Wonderwall' by Oasis as this beautiful glen is an oasis of calm, (although it may be a little different at the height of the tourist season!) www.youtube.com/watch?v=6hzrDeceEKc I also added 'Barriers' by David Archuleta for the 'Too many barriers' lyric www.youtube.com/watch?v=xaWQwRCltiw Sight and Sound
