A bit of detective work.. any further information gratefully received...!
A c1900 Barnsley photograph identified as 'Strafford Colliery', which I presume means the colliery also known as Rob Royd. I believe this is the mine which is located beneath the grounds of Wentworth Castle.
The only identified person is the young man on the far right, Eli Simpson Scott (c1884-1961). Eli described himself as a blacksmith on his daughter's baptism certificate (1910). The 1911 census however, describes him as a 'pick sharpener, above ground'. Eli lived on Keresforth Hill Road Barnsley and married Clara Hirst manageress of Sugden's shirt factory Shaw Mills. Eli is described on his marriage certificate as the son of Eli Simpson, miner. The 1891 census however, describes him as the adopted son of John and Clara Jordan of Sykes Street Barnsley. The only likely record of Eli senior I can find is of a Yorkshire born miner working in the Durham coalfield in the late c19th.
The photograph appeared in The Barnsley Chronicle on July 29th 1983, Eli's daughter Irene Parkin having sent it into the paper. I recently purchased it and another pic on Ebay.
