first ducklings of the season

Six little ducklings, hatched with eggs given to me by Bree. Hopefully at least one will be a girl so I can give it to her.

no Fonzie = duckling slaughter

18 Sep 2014 89
When Fonzie was a year old I trained him to protect our chickens and ducks. If he heard them making any sort of unusual noises he would hurtle down to them, barking fiercely. He never hurt them, and they were not afraid of him. For four years we had no fox attacks. Within a week of his death, we have now had a fox raid on our five two-week-old ducklings. Four had their necks bitten through and were disembowelled. Only one survived, and was cowering in the back of their nest box, but it was so badly injured, I killed it. Just awful.

Six out of ten eggs in the incubator hatched today. Ducklings are so much cuter than chicks.

4 days old, and at last, they can go swimming!

goose Tiny and her adopted ducklings

We released the 4 week old ducklings for a day on the pond, and to our surprise one of our geese, Tiny, immediately went to them and adopted them as her own. She made sure they stayed close to her, and defended them from us, the dogs, the other ducks, and even the other geese. They have decided she is a Good Thing, and stick close to her. (Mind you, there were five to start with, and the next morning there were only four.)

the rooster pen is adapted for the ducklings: a heat lamp in the bedroom, finer wire to keep them in, and a mini-pond

oh, the horror...

28 Mar 2011 87
I know it is best done early, and that it saves on annual trauma, and blablabla, but it was still awful for both of us, not to mention for the 5 of them...
