The 'Parque Pumalín' is a 3250 km² private nature reserve in the Palena Province of Chile, created by the United States environmental foundation The Conservation Land Trust, which is endowed and led by the American business magnate Douglas Tompkins. Designated a Nature Sanctuary in 2005, Pumalín is Chile's largest private nature reserve and is operated as a public-access park, with an extensive infrastructure of trails, campgrounds, and visitor centers. Not all Chileans welcome Tompkins and his engagement, posters with 'Patagonia sin Tompkins' are sometimes seen beside the road. www.parquepumalin.cl/download/mapapumalin.pdf

Chaitén is a volcanic caldera 3 kilometres in diameter, 10 kilometres northeast of the town of Chaitén. The volcano entered a new eruptive phase for the first time in about 9,500 years on the morning of May 2, 2008. Forests near the volcano have been burned by pyroclastic flows and lateral explosions. Lahars caused flooding in the town of Chaitén, depositing ash mud to a depth of up to a metre or more, damaging many buildings, and completely filling the original course of the Chaitén River past the town.
