A Vintage Photos Theme Park photo for the theme of tricks or treats! (any kind of Halloween photo, including costumes, masks, jack-o'-lanterns, decorations, ghosts, skeletons, haunted houses, or anything spooky, scary, or frightening; no limit—post as many Halloween photos as you'd like!) .
Handwritten caption in green ink, lower right-hand corner: "Jack - Hallow-Eve - 1933."
A real photo postcard showing "Jack" -- usually a man's name -- dressed as a woman for Halloween in 1933.
The photo was previously pasted in an album and has remnants of paper and glue on the other side. The photographic paper used for the postcard backing has an Azo stamp box (squares in all four corners, in use from 1924 to 1949).
Sargent Student Studying, ca. 1930s (Books)

An enlargement of the bookshelf on the college student's desk revealed the following titles: Textbook of Anatomy and Physiology , 9th ed., College Zoology , by Heg[ner], and Organic Chemistry .
I was able to identify the first book as the ninth edition of Textbook of Anatomy and Physiology , by Diana Clifford Kimber, Carolyn Elizabeth Gray, and Caroline E Stackpole, which was published by Macmillan in 1934.
The second book, College Zoology , was authored by Robert W. Hegner and was also published by Macmillan, with a third edition in 1932 and a fourth in 1936.
Although I didn't attempt to track down details about Organic Chemistry , the presence of the other two books confirms that this photo dates to 1934 or later.

A college student sitting at her desk. Notice the small "Sargent" pennant on the wall (upper right-hand corner of the photo), which suggests she was a student at Sargent College (now Boston University College of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences: Sargent College ).
For more information, see the full version of this real photo postcard and an enlargement showing the books visible at the side of the desk.

A Vintage Photos Theme Park photo for the theme of college memories (your own or someone else's) .
This is a real photo postcard of a female student sitting at a desk and pretending to read a book as she poses for a photo. On the back of the card is an Azo stamp box design (with squares in the corners) that indicates a time frame ranging from 1924 to 1949.
A small "Sargent" pennant on the wall above the desk (see a cropped version of the photo for a better view of the pennant) suggests that the woman was a student at Sargent College, which is known today as the Boston University College of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences: Sargent College .
An enlargement of the bookshelf on the desk revealed the following titles: Textbook of Anatomy and Physiology , 9th ed., College Zoology , by Heg[ner], and Organic Chemistry .

Partial transcription of the handwriting on the back of this photo: "eine kleine Erinnerung an meinen erster Schultag. 14.10.1949" (Google translation: "a small remembrance of my first day at school, October 14, 1949").
For additional examples of these conical first-day-of-school gifts, see the Schultüte - School Cone group.
The Letters You Type Are a Scandalous Show!

A vinegar valentine postcard dating to the time when "typewriter" (rather than typist) was commonly used to refer to the person doing the typing as well as to the machine itself.

Just nothing you know,
And the letters you type
Are a scandalous show!
Mein erster Schulgang

A real photo postcard for the Schultüte - School Cone group.
Wikipedia explains the Schultüte traditon: "When children in Germany, the Czech Republic, and Austria set off for their first day in school upon entering first grade, their parents and/or grandparents present them with a big cardboard cone, prettily decorated and filled with toys, chocolate, candies, school supplies, and various other goodies. It is given to children to make this anxiously awaited first day of school a little bit sweeter."
Stamped on the back of the photo: "Egon Sonntag, Photo-Atelier, Reinickendorf, Auguste-Viktoria-Allee 2."

May Day Mayhem

Maypoles on May Day for the ABC Group (4/24/2017).
Mouse over the image above to see close-ups of the maypole on the left and the maypole on the right .
This real photo postcard shows the organized chaos of May Day festivities at a playground or schoolyard--location and date unknown, unfortunately--where two groups of students are dancing around two maypoles as other students and adults view the proceedings.
Could this be a maypole dance competition between two classes or schools? Are the two groups racing to see who will be the first to finish weaving their ribbons around their maypole?
It's not clear whether this is a competition, but it's interesting to note that older boys are holding up each maypole while girls wearing dark-colored skirts dance around one of them and girls in light-colored skirts dance around the other. Also, many of the boys standing in the background beyond the maypoles are wearing shirts emblazoned with the letter E, so I suppose it's possible that the clothes are athletic uniforms reflecting different classes or schools.
In any case, even if we can't tell exactly what's going on, the image provides an intriguing glimpse at a May Day celebration from days gone by.

Who Was That Masked Santa?
09 Dec 2013 |
|
|
|
Stamped on back: "Hill Studio, 1415 Derry Street, Harrisburg, Pa."
Handwritten on back: "Dec. 23, 1947."
A puzzling photo of a masked Santa Claus (evidently a woman wearing a skirt) sitting next to a pile of wrapped presents and a Christmas tree. Newspapers are strewn about on the floor, and the walls in the background seem to be either water-stained or wet (could it be the inside of an unheated shed or trailer with condensation running down the walls?). The tips of what appear to be ironing boards surround Santa on both sides. Could this show early preparations for a gift distribution of some sort? Or has a downtrodden Santa taken up residence in a storage unit?
