Taking It Easy in the Backyard, Johnson Air Statio…

17 Jun 2024 2 2 161
A Vintage Photos Theme Park photo for the theme of kiddie pools (or a regular swimming pool if no kiddie pool) . Handwritten note on the other side of the photo: "Taking it easy in our back yard at Johnson Air Station , Japan, July 1962." A woman sits in a foldable aluminum webbed chaise lounge chair while her sons play in their kiddie pool. A bamboo fence surrounds the yard, and a Japanese wagasa umbrella provides some protection from the sun. On the right-hand side, the blurred face of a neighbor peers over the fence.

Snacking in the Sixties

04 Apr 2022 2 277
A Vintage Photos Theme Park photo for the theme of lines/stripes . Five boys are sitting at a patio table in the back yard as they drink Food Fair root beer and orange soda and snack on Wheat Thins, twin pops, and Fruit Flavored Slices. Three of the boys are wearing striped shirts, and the two oldest boys look similar enough to be brothers or maybe even twins. The Kodak Paper stamp box on the other side of this real photo postcard was first used around 1950. The design of the Wheat Thins box on the table suggests a date sometime in the sixties based on the Nabisco Wheat Thins - 1960s image posted on Flickr by Brandon (Waffle Whiffler). Update: After another Alan commented on Flickr that he was getting a sixties vibe from this photo, I did some additional checking and found a clearer example of the side of the box (see Nabisco Wheat Thins - 1960s ). I revised the title and description to reflect that these kids were probably snacking in the sixties rather than the seventies.

Let's end the year and celebrate the new one by continuing this Free-For-All through January.) A Vintage Photos Theme Park photo for the theme of in colour . A man and woman dressed in light blue or grey clothes pose in front of their house, which is painted in pastel shades of blue. There's a blue Adirondack chair on the porch, a bicycle on the sidewalk, and a car--barely visible on the right--parked in the driveway.

Grandma and Grandpa Take the Cake

01 Nov 2020 3 2 363
A Vintage Photos Theme Park photo for the theme of grandma and grandpa (grandparent(s) featured in a family photo) . A grandmother and grandfather hold a two-tiered cake as they pose for a photo with their grandson. All three of them are wearing flowers in their coat and jacket lapels. The presence of the cake and flowers makes me wonder if the grandparents are celebrating a special wedding anniversary. Given how the cake is tilted, I just hope that it didn't slide off onto the grandson's head!

Women in Suburbia, 1963

14 Sep 2020 2 2 388
A fashion (in its day) photo for the Vintage Photos Theme Park. This is a Kodachrome slide processed by Kodak in July 1963. The image shows two women and a small child posing for a photo among the orderly lawns and houses of a 1960s suburban development. The older woman is dressed up in a patterned dress, necklace, and earrings, while the younger one is wearing a striped cover over her dress. The woman on the left is named Ethel (last name unknown), and she appears in other slides that I purchased along with this one. See, for instance, Ethel's Oil Painting, 1967 .

A Lady Lounging on the Lawn in 1965

19 Nov 2017 1 1 581
A deck chairs / lawn chairs photo for the Vintage Photos Theme Park. This is a Kodachrome Transparency slide dated January 1966, so I'm guessing that this lady was luxuriating in the comfort of her aluminum webbed chaise lounge lawn chair sometime in 1965.

Buckeye Force Pumps, Springfield, Ohio

28 Aug 2016 4 2 1219
"Buckeye Force Pumps. Mast, Foos & Co., Springfield, O.-U.S.A. Manufacturers of Buckeye Lawn Mowers, Iron Turbine & Buckeye Wind Engines." A dramatic illustration of why Victorian-era families needed Buckeye Force Pumps--so the kids could help extinguish house fires!

We Are Having a Hot Time

03 May 2016 4 1 1150
Printed on the back of this postcard: "Th. E., L. Theochrom-Serie No. 1210|6. Printed in Germany." Postmarked Baltimore, Md., Apr. 7, 1910, and addressed to Miss Ella Killinger, Mongul, Franklin Co., Pa. Handwritten message: "How is your five o'clock beau. Just the same I guess. With love to all and from the girls. Our address is 2334 E. Monument St., Balto., Md. From Ellen Truer." Anyone know what a "five o'clock beau" might refer to? A boyfriend that you only see after work perhaps?

The Globe Lawn Mower

15 Aug 2014 5 2 1231
"The Globe Lawn Mower. The Henderson-Achert Co. Litho. Cin." This is a good illustration of Dave Cheadle's observation regarding lawn mower trade cards: "To demonstrate the ease of operation, the mower is invariably shown being pushed by a remarkably overdressed girl, boy, or young woman." For additional information, see the "Lawn Mowers and Landscaping" section in Cheadle's Victorian Trade Cards: Historical Reference and Value Guide (Paducah, Ky.: Collector Books, 1996), pp. 150-51. Richard D. Sheaff features his own copy of this Globe Lawn Mower trade card in the Gaslight Album section of his dazzling and inspiring Sheaff : ephemera site. As Sheaff explains, lithographers used Gaslight Style to create the illusion of depth: "Type, vignettes, products, and design elements are made to seem multi-layered through the use of shadows, superimposition, dimensional banners and ribbons, turned-up faux page corners, and choice of colors." In this trade card, the shadowing and complexity of the letters in "The Globe," the flowing "Lawn Mower" banner that's superimposed over the G, and the elaborate border at the top all help to create the multi-layered effect that's characteristic of the Gaslight Style. The careful placement of the young woman and her lawn mower in the foreground, the bounding dog in the middle, and the tree in the background also contribute to the feeling of depth.

Riding Toward the Sun: Dale Evans and Buttermilk

12 Jun 2014 2 1 1516
A Kodachrome slide dated July 1959. After a hard day at the Big Rocks shootout, this diminutive Dale Evans has holstered her gun and is shielding her eyes as she heads toward the sun with Buttermilk (if she had waited until evening, she could have avoided the bright light and followed the conventional Western gunslinger practice of riding off into the sunset ). Holding Down the Fort at Big Rocks: Dale Evans, Bu…

12 Jun 2014 1 1 1360
A Kodachrome slide dated July 1959. Still grasping her toy gun, this Dale Evans wannabe--with Buttermilk and Lassie by her side--stands ready to defend Big Rocks against the bad guys. See also Gunfight at Big Rocks and Riding Toward the Sun .

Gunfight at Big Rocks: Dale Evans with Buttermilk…

12 Jun 2014 3 2040
A Kodachrome slide dated July 1959. This little gunfighter is wearing a Dale Evans cowgirl hat as she holds her toy gun and prepares to take aim at the bad guys. Perhaps she's pretending that her toy horse is Buttermilk , Dale's trusty steed on TV's The Roy Rogers Show (1951-57), and her pet collie is Lassie , the canine star of the popular and long-lasting television show (1954-73). Rabbit Characters, Ault, Colorado, 1910

11 Apr 2014 4 1424
Based on the messages written by Louise, a former teacher, on the front and back of this postcard, this photo shows two young students dressed in rabbit costumes for a springtime (possibly Easter) school program in Ault, Colorado, in 1910. They're posing in a backyard (perhaps a schoolyard) and seem to be holding a string between them. Handwritten message on the front: "These are the two rabbit characters which made such a 'hit' in our closing program last spring. Mrs. Harding and I made the costumes." Postmarked: Ault, Colorado, Oct. 13, 1910. Addressed to: Miss Grace Burgess, Victor, Colo. Handwritten message on the back: "Dear girlie, Since I am not teaching, I am so busy doing nothing that I don't seem to find time to write to anyone. Wanted to tell you that I have joined the Christian Church. Louise." See also a cropped version of this real photo postcard for a close-up view of the rabbit costumes :
