I didn't have s particularly long lens on when I took this image, so a cropped aggressively to home in on this line of pelicans cruising on Waskesiu Lake. This was taken during a trip to Prince Albert National Park.

pelicans at the Arts Centre

White American pelicans grooming and feeding on Wascana Lake on a calm morning. The performing arts centre appears on the right side of the image.

meeting at the spillway

13 Jul 2024 2 29
Pelicans perched along the spillway from Wascana Lake into the creek of the same name. I think the aerated water likely attracts them because they more easily find a meal there. Maybe they just like the sound of rushing water, and each other's company.

early morning meeting

A view from a bridge over Wascana Creek of White American Pelicans gathering on rocks in Wascana Creek, just downstream from a spillway controlling the outflow of water from the lake of the same name.

pelicans in flight 2

Pelicans in flight are graceful and powerful. They are also a challenge to track in the air. The framing of this image could be better, but at least I got the shot.

pelicans in flight

Tracking birds in flight is a challenge. This is the best of several attempts to capture these pelicans in flight, while another looks on. This image was taken at Prince Albert National Park, in Saskatchewan.

time to move!

19 Jun 2024 2 2 22
One of these White American pelicans decided it was time to move to another part of the bay, and some of them began to follow.

I don't usually anthromorphize animal behaviour, but this image of White American pelicans on Wascana Creek seemed to call out for an exception.

keeping a balance

17 May 2024 3 3 27
As I recall this White American Pelican was trying to keep its balance on a stone just below the surface of Wascana Creek. Pelicans like to congregate at this location on the creek because of the stones and the oxygenated water flower over a weir out of fram on the right.

Parlement of Foules

19 Aug 2023 2 2 22
Watching these waterfowl - ducks, gulls and pelicans - congregating together on a shallow spot on Wascana Lake reminded me of the poem Parlement of Foules by Geoffrey Chaucer. They seemed content to hang out together on a warm afternoon.

breakfast time on the lake

American White pelicans cruising for breakfast on Wascana Lake.

waiting for their turn

05 May 2022 3 2 45
The four White American Pelicans in the foreground have ridden down the rushing water from a weir, while those in the background wait for their turn. It was like watching kids line up for a turn down a waterslide.
