Ertholmen is a place steeped in history, a handful of islands, two of which are inhabited. They are the easternmost outpost of Denmark. The first people to live on Ertholmen were soldiers, because Denmark needed a naval base and there was a natural harbour between Frederiksø and Christiansø. Today's ferry and lots of fishing boats and private yachts are still using it. Also a fort was built and extended over the years. In 1808, when Denmark was at war with England, an English armada tried to land but was driven away by cannon fire and bad weather. In the early 19th century there also was a political prison on Frederiksø for people who demanded more democracy. When the barracks were no longer needed, the Danish government allowed fishermen and former soldiers to live in the old buildings (the flats must be tiny but that's just a guess as I've never been inside one). Some painters and birdwatchers also came, and these days the islands are a tourist attraction. Most of the houses are Listed Buildings, and the post office sells special stamps. They've even got a small inn where you can book rooms for a longer stay, but most visitors just come for a "day" trip (three hours) by ferry from Gudhjem. In the summer season there are three trips to the islands daily but you have to leave on the same boat that took you there, otherwise everybody would want to leave on the last one. There's a museum in Lille Tarn, which opens during the summer months.

When I saw these, I was intrigued by the colour scheme.

My street - Rodtschenko style

10 Nov 2011 173
There are no pavements in my housing estate, just the road with ditches on either side as well as a grassy area with trees and bushes, which is being looked after by the residents. We're fighting to keep it like that. In the 60 years since the foundation of our Lohkamp estate there hasn't been a single traffic accident!

It's a lovely day today - cold and sunny. After buying some bread rolls for breakfast I took a little detour to Lake Krupunder thinking of some "frosty" images to capture - and here they are.

Sunday morning: The sun's fighting the fog, I'm standing underneath the Harbour Bridge (in Hamburg, not Sydney) - and suddenly that wind turbine pops out of the mist!

9 november - les feuilles mortes

12 Aug 2013 1 1 258
One of the smaller Jewish Cemeteries in my hometown, Hamburg. The gate is firmly locked, but you may peer through the iron fence. November 9, 1938, was the day they burned the synagogues, a few years later they burned the people. This is neither forgiven nor forgotten. Copyright © Baerbel A Rautenberg (BARefoot images). All rights reserved.
