Nikon D2Xs and Tamron SP AF 17-50mm f/2.8 at 50mm. This however is a crop, so it's probably akin to 100mm or more.

Kennet and Avon Canal, Bath. Thanks to the man for being a good sport.
Nikon D2Xs and Tamron SP AF 17-50mm f/2.8 lens. This is a selective enlargement. The 17-50mm type of lens suits wide-angle work rather than portraiture. I frequently wanted more telephoto and had to crop in post-processing. These days I get on better with a 18-200mm zoom.

Travelling on the railways was a different experience when compartments were preferred to open plan. Are there any advantages in open plan?

Nikon D2Xs + Tamron SP AF 17-50mm f/2.8 lens. This is a tiny file because it was shot as a jpeg and subsequently cropped. Being a slow learner, it did not occur to me for some years that a zoom lens which terminated at 50mm did not suit my style. The photography books advise 'get closer'. That's a bit impractical when there's a canal between you and the subject.
Important points:
1. Shoot RAW and process in decent software.
2. Don't bother following other people's advice (see 1 above).
3. There is no windlass in this picture (but there ought to be).
Windlass

The windlass is an apparatus for moving heavy weights. On a canal, a windlass consists of an L-shaped handle, attached to a square socket that, in turn, connects to the winding mechanism on the lock gate.

Was only a jpeg to begin with. Cropped. Converted to B&W. Result: tiny file.
