During the second world war the British Ministry of Food encouraged so much extra production of carrots that by 1942 there was a 100,000 ton surplus. The Ministry's "War Cookery Leaflet 4″ included recipes for carrot pudding, carrot cake, carrot marmalade and carrot flan. There were madder ideas from non-official sources. Britain is famous for eccentricity. Carrots contain high levels of vitamin A and contribute to the health of your eyes. Carrots don't actually improve your night vision. The big carrots sold in supermarkets are cultivated for their heavy crop and don't have much taste. Keep your wits about you if you are dicing carrots. There are no prizes for speed, or if there are, there shouldn't be.

The one with the bus ticket doing duty as a bookmark. This was definitely photographed with an old M42 lens on a Canon EOS 30D. I was using three old lenses and so whilst I cannot be certain, I am almost sure that the Soligor C/D Wide-Auto f/2.8 28mm (made by Sun in 1980) was on the Canon in this instance, along with a Minolta Close-Up Lens No.1 in the filter mount.

Some years ago an antique corkscrew came my way. From one end of the handle erupted a dirty old brush. This was a feature of corkscrews from around 1780 to 1850. The purpose was to dust away debris from wax used to seal the bottle or fungus that might have accumulated on the cork. A neighbour with practical skills sawed the brush part off and reconstructed the corkscrew handle, making it the kind of tool you'd prefer to use rather than avoid. The photograph was made with a Micro-Nikkor 55mm f/3.5 lens on a Nikon D700. The background is a Penguin paperback book from circa 1971 entitled 'Cooking in a Bedsitter' by Katharine Whitehorn.
