Poultry Cross
17 Sep 2016 |
|
The Poultry Cross in Salisbury, Wilts, is a medieval stone structure which once served as the heart of the city market. It is in a poor state of repair. It is the last remaining cross; originally there were four, each serving a particular type of produce: poultry, meat, cheese, and cloth.

Photographed from the south side of St Edmund's church in Salisbury. The church has been decommissioned and is now an arts centre. The focus here is not good, but I nevertheless like the result. There are several 18th and 19th century houses in Bedwin Street, but this pair of cottages under one half-timbered gable are much earlier, probably 16th or 17th century.

Salisbury cathedral was built quickly. The nave, transepts, and choir were up by 1258, a period of only 38 years. Uniquely among English cathedrals, the main building is completely in a single style: Early English Gothic.
