Lens: AF Nikkor 85mm f/1.8D. If I were limited to a single lens, this would probably be it.

Wafaa belly dancers. Despite the scruffy background and the too-tight framing, this photograph probably captures the essence of the dancers' performance better than any of the others I got that day.

Nikon D2Xs fitted with a Nikon TC-16A teleconverter and a 75-150mm f/3.5 Series E lens. When you use legacy lenses on the D2Xs, you have a choice of metered manual or aperture-priority modes. Usually I use the latter; you can dial in more or less exposure if the meter is being fooled. Here, I wanted a slow-ish shutter speed as I waited for a subject to pass under me on a bridge over a motorway. The simplest way of getting that seemed to be to be low ISO (where the D2Xs excels anyway) and a small aperture (f/8 got me into the right arena). I took quite a few pictures and this one was really the only one I liked.
It's Just One Bridge After Another

Brunel built bridges for ramblers and farmers and horse riders as well as road users. It's exhausting cataloguing all of them.

The London - Bristol main line is being electrified. The visual effect will be great in a village such as this where the railway is carried on a high embankment all the way through the parish. Just to complete the misery, a switching station is being built next to this bridge. Oh joy.

Earlier this year I bought the Canon 100-300mm USM lens from a secondhand dealer for £49. The dealer warned that it had ‘dusty optics’; if you research the subject of dust in lenses on the web you soon discover that a shovel full of dust in a lens might make a difference to its performance, but a few miniscule specs seldom impair the image.
Near where I often buy my groceries there is a recreation ground, and this event was taking place. It seemed too good an opportunity to miss. I have lost count of the number of times I’ve taken a camera ‘just in case’ and for once it was worthwhile. A triumph of hope over experience, as Samuel Johnson remarked, although he was referring to the subject of remarriage, as opposed to habitually taking a camera everywhere.
