Brick Wall in Lower Alma Street

27 Sep 2023 4 76
In England we once used the names of our battles to name newly built streets. It goes without saying that the names of battles we had won were much preferable to the ones we had lost, but according to history, we didn't lose much during that period. During the Crimean War of 1853–1856, in the Battle of the Alma near the lower reaches of the Alma river, the allied British, French, and Ottoman armies defeated the Russians under Prince Aleksandr Sergeevich Menshikov on 20 September 1854. This was very useful for the developers of the new street just north of the Paxcroft brook. The photograph shows a brick wall in the street which I guess dates from around that time. It is a fine and enduring memorial to the artisans then toiling in the area. But it will soon require repointing. Let's hope they use a lime mortar to match the original. Footnote: English soldiers had scarcely the strength to stand up to fight during this campaign. They were fed bad food, and not enough of it, when they were fed at all. Their health was poor and their accommodation was dreadful. Some reforms were made following this scandal. The English class system was at the root of this disgrace. Photographed using a lens made c1971 - a Nikkor-H 50mm f/2. It has been modified to AI standard so that it mounts safely on modern digital SLRs from Nikon, in this case an elderly D2Xs. 200 ISO; f/5.6; 1/200th.

Photographed with a Canon EF 35-105mm f/3.5-4.5 lens on a Canon EOS 30D camera. This lens was amongst the first of the new Canon EF mount and precedes the digital technology. However, it works well enough on my £69 EOS 30D. I love making pictures with old kit. The latest tech might be better, but by what margin? f/8, 1/500th, 800 ISO. Going for sharpness at the expense of noise. Not that 800 ISO is particularly bad on a 30D anyway.

Depth of field courtesy of a Nikkor-H 85mm f/1.8 lens manufactured circa 1971. Fitted to a Nikon D2Xs; the Nikkor-H has fortunately been converted to AI standard. The D2 cameras have crop sensors; thus the field of view of an 85mm is more akin to 130mm. Here I was at 100 ISO with an aperture of f/4.2 and shutter speed of 1/125th.
