The Guildhall

Totnes Guildhall was originally part of a Benedictine Priory, founded in 1088. In those days it was used as the Monks refectory. In 1553 the Merchants Guild of the town needed a meeting place and the old refectory was converted to suit this purpose. Used as a Magistrate court from 1624, and then from 1887 as the town Gaol, complete with prison cells, this old refectory finally became the home of the town council. Here it is just after some heavy rain.
