Vix - Saint-Marcel

Saint- Marcel, placed on a mountain just north of Châtillon-sur-Seine, serves the parishes of Vix and Etrochey. The church was erected within the 12th century - and some merovingian sarcophagi were used to stabilize the walls. The area all around the church has an even much longer history. A plaque on the graveyard honors Maurice Moisson, who in the early 1950s led the excavations of an important prehistoric complex from the Hallstatt- / La Tène-period. Several burial mounds were found. The most spectacular is known as "Vix Grave" (aka "Grave of the Lady of Vix", "Tombe de Vix"). The "Trésor de Vix", including the "Vix Krater" is meanwhile on display in a museum in Châtillon-sur-Seine. www.musee-vix.fr/fr/ Here is what Wiki knows about: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vix_Grave
