Modena, an Etruscan foundation, was an important city in the Roman Empire and a stronghold against the barbarian attacks at its end. It is said that it was never sacked by Attila, for a dense fog hid it (a miracle said to be provided by Saint Geminianus, patron of Modena), but it was eventually buried by a great flood in the 7th century and abandoned. Towards the end of the 9th century, Modena was rebuilt and fortified by its bishop Ludovicus. When the construction of the cathedral began in 1099, the city was part of the possessions of Margravine Matilda of Tuscia. But when the building was consecrated by Lucius III in 1184, it was a free commune. In the wars between Frederick II and Gregory IX, it sided with the emperor. Two churches built since the 5th century on the site of the present cathedral were both destroyed when Modena got resettled. A church was erected that soon was too small and a large cathedral was planned. Work on the present cathedral began in 1099 under the direction of the master builder Lanfranco. The first stone was laid in 1099 with the support of Matilda of Tuscia. A plaque outside the main apse gives 23 May 1099 as the date of the foundation of the new Modena Cathedral and also the name of the architect Lanfranco. The cathedral was consecrated by Pope Lucius III in 1184. However, the cathedral was not completed until 1322. The marble parapet created by Anselmo da Campione (ca. 1150-1210) shows the Passion of Christ including the Last Supper. An ambo projects from it.

In the center of Modena, where the Duomo di Modena (aka "Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta e San Geminiano") is placed, churches have existed since the 5th century. After the burial site of Modena's patron Saint Geminianus, a former bishop (+397), was dicovered here, the existing cathedral seemed to small. The first stone laying for the cathedral of today took place in May 1099, strongly supported by Matilde di Canossa (aka "Matilda of Tuscany"). First architect was Master Lanfranco, descibed as "maestro ingenio clarus [...] doctus et aptus". The Duomo di Modena was consecrated in 1184, but the building process continued. It was finally completed in 1322. The interior of the Duomo is divided into one nave and two aisles, the interior length is 63 metres. Below the risen presbyterium is the crypt, where since 1106 the remains of Saint Geminianus are kept. Many small graffiti cover the pillars in the crypt. It must have taken some effort to carve in such a large cross and the initials. Below the letters is another small cross.

Around the four sides of the capital are mermaid quadruplets.

Part of this impressive parapet is a pulpit. Below this are the atlantes, supporting it since more than 700 years. Anselmo da Campione, who came (like Lanfranco) from the area near the Lake Como, worked here with his workshop. These experienced specialists, known as "Maestri Campionesi" worked here over many decades. One of them was Anselmo´s grandson Arrigo da Campione.

I am not sure, wether one of the "Campionese-Masters" created this capital, depicting "profane music" (sinful!). A very flexible dancer performs a "sabre dance".

They all originated in from the Lake Como area, where so many gifted sculptors and architects, known as "Magistri Comacini" came from. The campanile ("Torre Ghirlandina") stands at 86 metres. The structure was set up in 1179 on five floors, but was raised in the following two centuries with the introduction of the octagonal tip.
