The castle complex of the Slavic Abodrites named Mikelenburg was built here in the 7th century. In the course of time, Mikelenburg became Mecklenburg the namesake for the entire Mecklenburg landscape and for the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. King Otto III first mentioned the Mecklenburg in a document in 995. After the castle was finally destroyed the village of Mecklenburg developed from the settlement of the outer castle in the 14th century.
