Tarvisio - Santi Pietro e Paolo

29 Jun 2017 279
The parish church of Tarvisio (German "Tarvis") was built within the 15th century. The round octagonal "Karner" (= ossuary) next to it may date from the 13th century, when a second round tower existed here as well. The church was strongly fortified, surrounded by walls and ditches, as the area was raided by Turkish troops from 1478 on. The tower, later used as a "karner" or "mausoleum", was in the beginning built for defense. Karners do not need loop holes. Tarvisio is located on an old, important Trans-Alpine road, only about 8kms south of the border between Italy and Austria. It belonged from 1002 to 1759 to the Prince-Bishopric of Bamberg (= "Hochstift Bamberg). In medieval times Bamberg (about 600kms north) was the center of a very powerful diocese. When in 1238 Berthold V. von Andechs became Patriarch of Aquileia and moved the capital of the ecclesiastical state from Cividale to Udine (see previous uploads), his uncle Poppo von Andechs-Meranien was Bishop in Bamberg.

Udine is the historical capital of Friuli. It was mentioned first time, when Empereor Otto II donated a castle to the Patriarchs of Aquileia. When Berthold V. von Andechs (1180-1251), brother of French queen consort Agnes of Merania, Hungarian queen consort Gertrude of Merania and Saint Hedwig of Silesia in 1238 became Patriarch of Aquileia, he moved the capital of the ecclesiastical state from Cividale to Udine. In 1420 Udine was conquered by the Republic of Venice. It remained under Venetian control until 1797, being the second largest city in the state. For a short while it was French. After the Congress of Vienna it became part of the Kingdom of Lombardy–Venetia (- Austria) - and was included in the newly formed Kingdom of Italy in 1866. The Via Mercatovecchio in the center of Udine in the evening. The street cafe on the right is still open. Seen in the background is the "Loggia del Lionello".

Opposite the Loggia del Lionello (see the previous upload) on Udine´s principal square (Piazza della Libertà), is the Loggia di San Giovanni, with it´s clock tower "Torre dell’Orologio". Seen on the tower is the "Lion of Saint Mark" (= "Lion of Venice"). The lion was removed by the French in 1797, but got "re-installed" in 1883.

The building process got interrupted by the "1348 Friuli earthquake", that caused severe damages. The "Duomo Cattedrale di Santa Maria Annunziata" was finally completed in 1461, but underwent many alterations over the next centuries. The cathedral has a small octagonal bapstistery, like many towns and cities in Italy (eg. Pisa, Pistoia, Galliano, Parma, Firenze). Here it was used as a foundation, when the campanile got built with red bricks. The baptisterium today hosts the cathedral´s museum. The Annunciation, seen one of the baptistery´s outer walls. Archangel Gabriel on the left, the Virgin to the right of the window.
